8 Common Things to Avoid Doing This Spring Festival

on 02/15/2018 - 05:39 pm

China is full of traditions and rituals; especially during this time of year. To help you avoid misfortune in the coming year, we've compiled a list of the most important and common acts that these traditions advise us to avoid doing during the Spring Festival.

1. Avoid cleaning or taking out the garbage

Sweeping, washing, and mopping during the first five days of the spring festival are said to drive away one’s good fortune. The sixth day is when one should throw away old clothes, take out their trash, and clean their homes to send away the ghost of poverty.

2. Avoid washing your hair

In Chinese language, hair (发) has the same pronunciation and character as "fa" in facai (发财), which means 'to become wealthy'. Washing your hair on the first day of the new year then may lead to washing away your fortune.

3. Avoid getting your haircut

As with cleaning, cutting your hair in the first days of the new year is like cutting away good fortune.

4. Avoid washing your clothes

The first and second day are celebrated as the birthday of Shuishen (水神, the Water God) so people avoid washing clothes on these days.

5. Avoid killing

Blood is considered a bad omen, causing things like knife wounds or a bloody incident, so killing should be avoided throughout the Spring Festival.

6. Avoid using knives and scissors

Any accident at the start of the new year is thought to lead to the depletion of wealth in the coming year so the use of knives and scissors should be avoided.

These last two are just tips that don't necessarily root in tradition

7. Avoid visiting a Temple on the third day of the New Year

Worshipers typically visit temples on the third day to light incense and pray to the deities for blessings and good luck in the year ahead. If you like crowds and busy scenes, give it a try, otherwise, consider planning your visit on another day.

8. Avoid setting off fireworks

Fireworks may be useful in driving away evil; however, they're illegal in Shenzhen and setting them off can bring you a fine of up to 2,000 RMB and 15 days detention.
