on 10/18/2017 - 11:15 am

Bars and restaurants throughout Shenzhen have been asked to close early, events like the Annual British Day Celebration have been postponed, and netizens continue to complain of greater than normal difficulties using the Internet, as the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China gets under way today in Beijing.

Expected to run for a week, the event will see a reshuffle of China’s top leadership and the setting of a new policy agenda for the next five years.

A total of 2,287 delegates will attend the 19th national congress, representing 89 million party members from 31 Chinese provinces, major state institutions, government agencies, the People's Liberation Army and state-owned enterprises. This five-yearly event, where president Xi Jinping will deliver his work report charting policy directions for the next five years, will be held at the at the Great Hall of the People in the nation’s capital.

The meeting is billed as China’s most important political event and will produce a new leadership to govern the world’s most populous nation. The congress will also update the party charter, which is expected to enshrine Xi’s thinking as official ideology. If “Xi Jinping’s Thought” is written into the charter, Xi will be elevated to the status of former leader Mao Zedong, and beyond the late paramount leader Deng Xiaoping.
