Donate to Charity in November - Get Free Food & Drinks at Terrace
You've probably heard of Movember by now, or at least seen guys go unshaven during the month of November. But if you're like me, you may still be wondering what exactly growing a moustache helps to accomplish.
Throughout this last year, ShekouDaily has been involved with quite a few charity events across Southern China; more so as word spread that we gladly go out of our way to support charities. So it came as no surprise that we were approached by a few people asking if we'd get involved with Movember. In each of these cases, we asked the same question: "What is it we should do and how does it help the cause?" The answers were pretty much the same... "Grow a stache bro." OK, that sounds simple enough. Then our follow-up question: "and what does that do?" Answer: "it helps to increase awareness about men's health issues." So far so good. Then conversations seemed to die down after our next question: "and then what?"
We love the idea of growing a moustache to help spread awareness of men's health issues, but it just seemed like something was missing. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like if we're doing this for charity, there should be some sort of tangible result that comes from it. No one was able to tell me what that was... that is, until a meeting I had last week.
On Wednesday November 9th, 2016 I sat down with Leon Durupt of Alberta, Canada, who has been living in Shenzhen for the last 11 years. He's a part-time musician, full-time dad and part owner of Terrace, a restaurant and live music venue in Sea World, Shekou, Shenzhen, China.
When Leon asked ShekouDaily to get involved in helping to promote Movember, I asked him our usual questions. When I got to the "and then what?" question, he had an answer right away. "Then we ask people to donate. It's all about raising money to support the cause," he tells me as we're discussing his plans for a Movember Madness Event the Terrace will hold on November 19th.
"There are a lot of charities that, for good reason, pay attention to women's issues," he added, "but the Movember Foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. They fund men's health projects to stop men from dying too young. It's a great cause that we want to encourage people to donate to. Not only that but we'd also like to call on all businesses to get involved and help in any way they can."
We looked around and found another business getting involved as well. Vista Medical SK is offering a FREE Prostate Screening Package throughout the month of November.
Leon also encouraged us to visit the Movember Foundation website at www.Movember.com, where we found a few alarming statistics:
* on average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women
* three quarters of suicides are by men
* 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute!
* Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases is expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030.
So we finally found what we needed to know. The Movember Foundation is dedicated to "funding breakthrough solutions that produce tangible improvements in the lives of those dealing with prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide prevention," and they've created a fun and interesting way to spread the message and solicit donations. They even have a globally accessible web site for receiving donations.
Now, the last question for Leon... "how will you encourage people to grow their moustaches AND donate to Movember?" His answer to this question surprised me.
"We're giving people two incentives to donate. First, we're offering a free selected drink to anyone that shows us their proof of donation via the Movember website anytime in November. More importantly though," he said emphatically, "we're going to match people's contributions by giving them a coupon for food and drinks at Terrace, worth the equivalent amount of their donation." He added though that, "the coupon will be given to people who come to our Movember Madness Party on November 19th and can be used throughout the rest of November."
I asked about the Movember Madness Party on the 19th... "It's just a chance to have fun with our moustaches and help spread awareness about Movember. Each person who donated will be entered into a Lucky Draw for a chance to win a bottle of Penderyn Single Malt Whiskey and a bottle of Penderyn Vodka, compliments of Liquor Town. We'll also have prizes for 'Best Stache' and will be giving our fake moustaches to people that are facially hairless on the night. We encourage everyone to come. It's going to be a fun night for a great cause."
Terrace is located on the second floor above the Starbucks in Sea World Square and can be reached at 0755-2682 9105
