At 6pm on August 31st, the Hong Kong Observatory announced that a tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea will linger around the sea areas to the west of Luzon and will be slow moving.

It is expected to keep a distance from Hong Kong tonight and early tomorrow (Friday) and then intensify as it gradually moves in our direction over the next couple of days.

The HKO stated that they may consider issuing their Standby Signal No. 1 tomorrow when the tropical cyclone takes on a more definite northerly track and edges closer to the coast of Guangdong

They also expect the weather to deteriorate progressively with heavy on Saturday and Sunday.

-----------

At 5pm, the Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau issued their white Typhoon Warning for the entire city of Shenzhen; advising of probable effects of a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours.

The HKO's “Tropical Cyclone Track Probability Forecast” BETA webpage showed a 30-40% probability that the storm will pass over Hong Kong over the next 9 days.

-----------

The Japan Meteorological Agency has become tracking the tropical depression; however, they have yet to post any forecasted track predictions. Additionally, this storm hasn't yet been added to the Weather Undergrounds Typhoon Tracking website.

As of 6pm, no name has yet been given to this event.
