Watch a Lunar Eclipse this Mid-Autumn Festival

on 09/14/2016 - 05:48 pm

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, we will have a chance to witness penumbral lunar eclipse during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. Weather permitting we can catch a glimpse at 3.05am September 17. The event will last for four hours and three minutes

As the moon passes through the penumbra (partial shadow) of the Earth, the moon will become slightly dimmer. More information to assist moon-watching by the public, the times of moonrise, transit, moonset, full moon and penumbral lunar eclipse during the Mid-Autumn Festival period are available here

The last lunar eclipse during the Mid-Autumn full moon that was visible in Hong Kong was a total lunar eclipse on September 17, 1997. The next lunar eclipse at the Mid-Autumn full moon will be a partial lunar eclipse on September 29, 2042.
